Description

This documentary examines the effects of the War on Drugs and drug enforcement policy on the criminal justice system in New York City. Tracking a few representative cases through the criminal justice process, the program looks at the roles of judges, defense attorneys, prosecutors, police and defendants in a system that is strained to the breaking point. The bulk of the program focuses on the narcotics trial of defendant Desmond Legister. Short segments also focus on the work of in-the-field undercover police officers at the Port Authority bus terminal, the workings of "Part N", a special court established to handle the overload of narcotics cases, and a look at the city's Family Court with the views of presiding judge, Judith Sheindlin.
